On Monday 2 August 2027, the sky over Marbella will go dark in the middle of the morning. Where will you be?

Some holidays are about the beach. Some are about the food. And once in a long while, a holiday is about a few minutes you will never forget.

On 2 August 2027, a total solar eclipse will cross the Strait of Gibraltar, and Marbella lies inside the path of totality. For just over three minutes, the Moon will completely cover the Sun. In Europe, totality will only be visible from Spain.

Here is what we know so far, and how to plan a villa holiday around it.

What Happens on 2 August 2027?

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun and blocks it completely. It only happens along a narrow strip of the Earth’s surface, the "path of totality". Outside that strip, people see a partial eclipse.

According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN), the 2027 path of totality will:

  • Start in the Atlantic Ocean and cross the Strait of Gibraltar from west to east
  • In Spain, cover Ceuta and Melilla, almost all of the province of Cádiz, part of the province of Málaga and the southernmost areas of Granada and Almería
  • Continue along the North African coast to Egypt and end in the Indian Ocean

The IGN also notes that in Europe, totality can only be seen from Spain. The rest of the country, and most of Europe, will see a partial eclipse.

Marbella: Inside the Path of Totality

Marbella is inside the strip. These are the local times for Marbella according to timeanddate (Central European Summer Time, the same as Madrid):

Phase Time (2 August 2027)
Partial eclipse begins 9:41 AM
Maximum eclipse 10:48 AM
Partial eclipse ends 12:01 PM
Totality 3 minutes 21 seconds

Other calculations give a few seconds less, so think of it as just over three minutes of totality. The whole eclipse, from first to last contact, lasts about 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Why a morning eclipse is good news

The IGN points out that the eclipse happens in the morning, around 10:50 AM peninsular time, when the Sun is already high enough in the sky to make it easy to observe. In other words, you don’t need a mountain top. A terrace with an open view of the sky can be enough.

What about the weather?

No one can promise clear skies a year in advance. But timeanddate’s historical data shows that on 2 August, Marbella has been cloudy only 7% of the time since 2000. Early August on the Costa del Sol is about as good a bet as you’ll find.

How Marbella Compares with Other Places

Totality lasts longer the closer you are to the centre line of the path. The IGN gives some reference points in Spain:

  • Ceuta: the longest in Spain, 4 minutes 48 seconds
  • Melilla: 4 minutes 34 seconds
  • Cádiz: 2 minutes 54 seconds
  • Málaga city: 1 minute 48 seconds

Marbella, with just over three minutes, offers something rare: a long totality from a luxury holiday destination, with beaches, restaurants and an international airport nearby.

Why You Should Book Early

The eclipse falls on a Monday in early August, already the heart of the summer season on the Costa del Sol. Add a once-in-a-generation event, and demand for the best villas will rise.

We already have a precedent. Spain’s total eclipse of 12 August 2026 moved travellers across the country. According to Hosteltur, Spain’s Ministry of Economy estimated an impact of €347 million and 446,700 additional tourists that week. Booking.com searches for some towns in the path rose by more than 500%.

If you want to watch the 2027 eclipse from your own terrace, now is the time to plan:

  • Book your villa early, especially for groups and large families
  • Plan a stay around the date so the eclipse is the highlight, not a rushed day trip
  • Arrange transfers in advance: many visitors will be travelling in the same days
  • Think about the view: you want an open sky towards the east and south-east, where the Sun will be in mid-morning

Choosing the Right Villa for Eclipse Day

Not every terrace is equal on eclipse day. The ideal villa has:

  • A terrace or garden with a clear view of the sky in the morning, free from tall trees or buildings
  • Enough outdoor space for the whole group to watch together
  • A shaded area for the rest of the morning, because this is August in Andalusia

Our team knows our villas inside out and can recommend the right one for your group.

Make It a Morning to Remember

An eclipse lasts minutes, but the morning around it can be unforgettable:

  • Eclipse breakfast: a private chef can serve a late breakfast or brunch on your terrace while the Moon slowly covers the Sun
  • Celebration lunch: keep the party going with a catered lunch once the eclipse is over
  • Private experiences: extend your stay with tours, boat trips and other experiences

Safety first

Never look directly at the Sun without proper protection. The IGN publishes safety advice for observing eclipses: follow it and use certified eclipse glasses for the partial phases.
